The idea
This project originated from our wish to provide a valuable alternative to the usual css galleries.
We had noticed a baby boom of galleries that looked all the same and we intended to create something different, easy to use and constantly updated. We regularly use Twitter, so we asked ourselves: why not use Twitter's awesome API in order to give visibility to the daily linked websites?
Using a simple hashtag, it's possibile to post a website on Evolvr with no effort and almost in real time. The Technologic Choice
The core of Evolvr is entirely developed in Ruby language. It consists of a spider that constantly runs in the background on our servers whose task is to obtain information from the Twitter's streamline and a front-end that makes use of Ruby on Rails framework in order to serve the dynamic web pages.
We decided to use Rails because it’s a framework that makes the most of the flexibility, the synthesis and the clarity of the Ruby language. Ruby on Rails enables us to be flexible and agile; this is one of our main priorities. As far as the front-end is concerned, we chose to use the Javascript technology and the Jquery library. We think it's an excellent framework because it’s very easy to use and steady. Moreover, we noticed considerable improvements on the performances in the last versions. Most of our projects use Jquery for the ayax feature.
Design Choices
We tried to create a fresh and modern style, assuring at the same time the highest possible simplicity is in use.
Since we can't rely on advanced test sections, we created our website imagining we were the final users, modifying and improving from time to time what appeared to be not up to or too difficult to use.
The color and style are Twitter-inspired, but we thought to add an extra personal touch.APIs
Many of the features of Evolvr are developed ad hoc. We offer two APIs which are the outcome of these features.
- Getmycolor enables to get color and description from a simple color code (hexadecimal).
- Redirectme returns the whole website address from a compressed URL.
Both libraries are available at the following addresses: http://getmycolor.kibun.it and http://getmycolor.kibun.it.
Future Plans
Our purpose is to make our application grow and turn it on a reference point in the web design panorama. We would like to give our registered members the opportunity to enjoy prominence and visibility and to provide our visitors with a rich source of inspiration.
We are constantly working to improve our website and to provide new features, so keep visiting Evolvr. News is on the horizon.Who are you?
